Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium on January 27, 1966. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alberta in 1991 studying philosophy and sculpture. Richard’s work is rooted in the expressiveness of the human form. Close observation, daily practice, and what could be described as attention to a ‘formalist’ ethic describes his approach to making art.

"With my newest sculptures I am using single pen and ink drawings as my sole reference, one view consisting of a few lines, to create a sculpture in the round. The initial results are freshly modeled sculptures that express the structure, movement, and weight of the figure while celebrating the material quality of the clay from which they were modeled."

Richard has works in the collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canadian Music Centre Library, the City of Edmonton, and the University of Alberta. Beyond his artistic practice Richard has traveled considerably throughout Brazil and Europe, worked as a professional firefighter since 1986, and actively volunteered in the community, co-founding and chairing two successful not-for-profit community based arts organizations since 1995.
